The growth and presence of hair on the body
are a biological necessity, which helps to maintain the body
temperature. They are a major contributor to an individual's
general appearance and are indicative of his social status
and personality. Of course, in case of women they provide
beauty and charm.
Hair grows from follicles, called hair roots located at the
bottom of the layer of skin beneath the epidermis, which contain
blood vessels and nerves. Sebaceous glands are tiny glands
situated along the follicular tubes from which the growing
hair shaft emerges. These glands secrete sebum, an oily substance,
which gives shine and lustre to hair. The colour of hair is
determined by the presence of a pigment called Melanin, which
is found in different proportions in individuals depending
upon the genetic and climatic factors.
Hair passes through three phases in its life cycle. The first
is the growing stage or Anagen. This stage lasts from 2 -
6 years. The hair grows continuously during this period. At
any one time about 90% of the hair follicles are in this stage.
The second stage of the hair cycle is the Catagen or degenerative
stage that lasts 1 -2 weeks. At any one time only 1 - 2 %
of the hair follicles are in this stage. The third stage of
the hair cycle is the resting stage or Telogen that lasts
between 3 - 5 months. At any one time about 10 % of the hair
follicles are in this stage. It is common for a man or a woman
to lose hair on combing or massaging during this period. However,
with healthy hair follicles, these old telogen hair are replaced
by new anagen hair in the next growing stage of the hair cycle.
The average rate of growth of hair is about 1 inch in 6 weeks
and it grows to 2 - 3 feet in length in about 4 years. As
we age, the duration of the growth stage becomes shorter,
and the length of the resting stage becomes longer. A shorter
growth stage results in shorter hair, and eventually thinner
and less pigmented hair. Bald spots on the scalp come suddenly
in the age group 20 - 40 years in 2 - 3 % people - known as
Alopecia areata. Hair loss is more common in men than women.
Improper nutrition, anaemia, high fever, fungal infection
can affect the hair growth. Sustained strong emotional stress
might cause an abnormally high number of follicles to enter
with resting stage and bring on temporary baldness. Certain
drugs, like excessive intake of vitamin A, can destroy hair
follicles. Malfunction of liver can also affect hair growth.
Exposure to scorching sun, dust, pollution, harsh shampoo,
irritant dye also affect the scalp and hence the hair growth.
Thus it becomes pertinent to address the associated problems
in order to prevent hair loss, premature greying and facilitate
hair growth.
